Living in Synergy Aims to Advance Media Literacy and Scholarship for Public Health
We live in a world that never stops talking. News feeds, notifications, trending videos, viral stories — the media doesn’t pause, and neither does its influence on how we think, feel, and see ourselves. For most people, navigating that world without a compass is the default. Living in Synergy exists to change that — and it’s bigger than a podcast.
Living in Synergy is a nonprofit initiative, a research-informed community, and a podcast series — all built around a single mission: advancing media literacy and digital scholarship for public health. The podcast is the heartbeat of the initiative, but the work extends further. It lives in the conversations it sparks, the educators it equips, the researchers it connects, and the listeners it empowers to show up differently in their digital lives.
Why This Matters
Media literacy isn’t a niche academic concern anymore. It’s a public health issue.
The rise of misinformation, algorithmic manipulation, and digital echo chambers has real consequences — for how people vote, how they parent, how they understand their own identities, and how they relate to one another. Research has consistently shown that the ability to critically analyze and evaluate media is directly tied to individual well-being and social cohesion. Yet practical, evidence-based education on these skills remains out of reach for most people.
Living in Synergy was built to close that gap.
What the Show Does
The podcast draws on NIH-funded and peer-reviewed research, but it doesn’t sound like a journal article. It sounds like a conversation — because that’s what it is. Host René Estes, whose expertise spans STEM, media, and culture, brings together scholars and thought leaders to make complex findings feel immediate and relevant. Listener questions and real-world stories are woven into every episode, so the dialogue flows both ways: between the academy and everyday life.
Core themes explored throughout the series include media narratives and misinformation, digital manipulation and privacy, agency and resilience online, and the psychology of decision-making in a media-saturated world. No episode leaves listeners without something concrete to take with them.
Who It’s For
Everyone. That’s not a marketing claim — it’s the point.
Whether you’re a teenager sorting through social media pressures, a parent trying to guide your kids through the digital world, an educator looking for evidence-based tools, or simply someone who wants to think more clearly about the information you consume, Living in Synergy meets you where you are. The show is designed to be accessible without being dumbed down — rigorous without being inaccessible.
Identity in the Digital Age
One of the podcast’s central threads is identity: how we form it, how media shapes it, and how we protect it.
This is not a simple question. Research on adolescent identity development shows that digital media plays a dual role — it can support the formation of values and self-understanding, but it can also fragment and confuse that process. Children, teenagers, and adults are all constructing their sense of self through a constant stream of images, narratives, and social signals. Influencers, algorithms, and platform design don’t just reflect culture — they actively shape it.
Studies on social media and identity suggest that both the quantity and quality of digital media use matter enormously for how people develop their sense of self. Living in Synergy explores these dynamics honestly — not to alarm, but to equip. Listeners come away with strategies for building a critical, resilient sense of identity that doesn’t bend to every algorithmic wind.
Our Approach
Every episode is grounded in evidence. Every conversation is designed to be engaging. And every season builds toward a larger goal: creating a durable, replicable model for media literacy education that anyone can access, anywhere.
Engagement metrics, listener feedback, and surveys are used to track the show’s reach and educational impact — because accountability matters as much to us as the content itself.
Living in Synergy isn’t just a podcast. It’s a movement — rooted in research, powered by community, and built on the belief that an informed, resilient, and ethically engaged public is possible. The conversation starts here.
